Students have been working on various activities related to the novel "The Giver."  Most recently for Chapter 20, they have been creating a visual that represents the "escape plan" that was outlined in the book.

In Math, students have worked through a Place Value "Detective" booklet solving various crimes (the booklet will be handed in on Thursday).

In French, students have a menu for their restaurant which is due tomorrow.

In Social Studies, we talked about the results of our Student Vote with Mrs. Foret's class.

Wednesday, October 9th

Students recently completed our unit in Math called Patterns & Equations.  We have started our new unit on Place Value.

In Language Arts, we are continuing to read "The Giver" and are completing comprehension activities related to the novel.

Students are continuing to learn about Trees & Forests in Science.  We have recently looked at types of coniferous and deciduous trees and just yesterday, started to look at environmental events that threaten specific areas.  Some students are researching about climate change, various types of pollution, clear cutting of forests, natural resources drain, etc.

In Gym, Hawkwood students raised $5700 for the Terry Fox Run.  This is an incredible amount of money raised by our students and Mr. Janzic and I will be dying our hair as a result.  Date for the hair dying has not been determined yet but students will have an input on the color choices!

Thursday, Oct. 3rd

Students are meeting with the Librettist today to discuss the upcoming Opera production here at Hawkwood School.  They will have an opportunity to have input on most aspects of the storyline.

Students also worked on a Patterns Review sheet and a quick Place Value Pre-Assessment for our next unit.  This pre-assessment will be used to help guide some of our meetings in the future for Hawkwood teachers to help improve students' learning.

In Language Arts, students have been reading The Giver.  They recently completed a journal writing response about which job they would want the Chief Elder to call for them at the Ceremony of the Twelves (ask your child about their job!).

Have a great day.

Students were completing their Trees & Forests research assignment earlier today.  The students will be handing in their projects tomorrow.  Here is the assignment if students need to finish it tonight:

Trees & Forests Grade 6 Science:

Tree Research Project

For this assignment, you will be researching three deciduous trees and three coniferous trees.

For each tree, you will be finding out:

·      The type of leaf
·      Shape of leaf or needle
·      Margin type or arrangement of needles
·      Where does the tree usually grow?  (Location and climate)
·      What is the average life span of the tree?
·      2-3 interesting facts about the tree

You will also be drawing a colored picture of the trees
